Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

Having trouble reading the ingredients in laundry detergent? I'm sure you're familiar with the long label of stuff. Many people would rather use a more environmentally friendly and eco friendly way to make laundry detergent. Fortunately, it is also friendlier on your wallet.

This is a recipe for powdered detergent. The initial investment will be a bit more because you will buy some supplies that won't need replaced any time soon.

You will need:

  • 1 air tight sealable container or pail that can hold at least 2 gallons (you can get this at hardware stores)
  • 1 scoop. Plastic is OK but bamboo is much nicer.
  • 1 really big spoon
  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Washing Soda
  • Liquid Castile Soap
  • Essential oil (optional)

You may not have seen two of these ingredients often, but they are all usually at your local grocery store. We just tend to overlook them.

The recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup of vinegar
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1 cup of washing soda
  • 1/4 cup of liquid castile soap
  • 5 - 10 drops (per gallon) of essential oil (optional)

Directions:

  • Pour the castille soap into the pail and add the dry ingredients.
  • Stir really well.
  • Add vinegar slowly. It will foam. Just keep stirring
  • Continue to stir until the liquid is absorbed and the powder forms clumps.
  • These clumps can be sifted or stirred away.

Some helpful "using" notes:
Usually, one scoop is fine for your water. However, if you have hard water or super dirty laundry, two or one and a half scoops might be needed. You'll learn after awhile what you need for your laundry.

Even with home made laundry detergent, stains need some work to get rid of. Try these stain removers.
#1. Hydrogen Peroxide
#2. Salt and lemon juice
#3. Baking soda and vinegar
#4. White vinegar - white vinegar can also be added to a load to freshen up clothes.

What about the static problem? Easy. Just make your own dryer balls. That article is on it's way...tomorrow.
